Thinking About White Teeth For The Holidays | Overland Park Family Dentist

Thinking about White Teeth for the Holidays | Overland Park Family Dentist

We all enjoy beverages that aren’t always the best for our teeth. Coffee, tea, red wine, soda pop, the list goes on and on. But around the holiday season, the number of festive beverages that we consume tends to go up as the temperature drops. Unfortunately, all those delicious drinks can spell trouble for your teeth.

With the coffee shop on every corner offering holiday-themed drinks that are too tempting to pass up, who could say “no” to a chestnut praline flavored latte or mocha laced with peppermint? Plus, with the cold weather putting a chill in our bones, that cup of tea in the morning tastes awfully good. And of course, the holidays are a time for gathering together and making merry, and at holiday parties there’s usually plenty of red wine. Unfortunately, like tea, red wine is rich in tannins, which allows the color to stick to your enamel more easily. A good rule of thumb is that any beverage that leaves a stain on clothes or carpets can also leave a stain on your teeth.

Tooth enamel is extremely porous, which means that colors from food and drinks can sink in, gradually staining your teeth. Besides color, you also have to watch out for particularly hot or acidic beverages, which can wear down or soften your enamel, making it easier for stains to take hold. That’s why hot coffee and tea is more likely to stain your smile than room temperature, and one of the many reasons why sugary sodas aren’t great for your teeth. Not to be a Grinch, but many hard candies, besides being loaded with sugar, have also been found to contain color agents that can stain teeth.

None of us want to give up our favorite beverages, especially this time of year! Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to help fight against tooth staining. One of the best preventative measures you can take is to brush immediately after consuming food or drinks that stain your teeth. If you can’t brush, rinse your mouth out thoroughly with water, and brush as soon as you’re able.

For a brilliant white smile, though, nothing beats a trip to your friendly Overland Park dentist for a teeth whitening treatment.
